Every year, the Ministry of Education selects all-around outstanding youths (Luyeechun, in Burmese) from high schools all over the country. In late April, these selected youths from all 14 states and regions come together at youth camps in Bagan, Innlay, and Ngwe Saung. At these youth camps, they attend seminars, visit famous landmarks, excurse local culture and businesses, and share their different perspectives on local issues.

To become a Luyeechun, a student has to pass three-level: school-level, township-level, and district-level. In each level, he has to take written-tests in Myanmar, English, Mathematics, and General Knowledge, sit for a verbal interview, and compete in sports, which include 800-meter run, 100-meter sprint, push-ups, and standing long jump.

Htet Myet was selected as an all-around outstanding student (Luyeechun) of Western District, Yangon Region in 2018 for the third time and participated in Luyeechun Youth Camp in Ngwe Saung Beach, Ayeyarwaddy Region.

His brief account of his personal experience is as follows.

“Being able to participate in Ngwe Saung Luyeechun Camp is the final opportunity for all Luyeechuns to meet each other and the highest achievement for those who had previously participated in Bagan Camp and Innlay Camp. Since students usually have to study hard for the matriculation examination in 10th Standard, it is extremely difficult for students to take part in Luyeechun competitions, which also include sports and extracurricular activities.

Although I did not participate in Ngwe Saung Luyeechun Youth Camp till to the closing ceremony because of my important trip to Bangkok, it was also a memorable trip for me since I had to work very hard to achieve it and it was my final chance to meet my Luyeechun friends.

On 28th April, 2018, Luyeechuns from all around the country gathered at Yangon Temporary Camp. In the evening, we were assigned to our groups. I was in Group 1 in which most members were my friends from previous camps. Next morning, we visited the Shwedagon Pagoda, paid homage to the Buddha, and offered donations to the Pagoda. Then, we left Yangon for Ngwe Saung Camp. In the afternoon, we stopped at Pathein, the capital of Ayeyarwaddy Region, to have lunch hosted by Ayeyarwaddy Region Chief Minister U Hla Moe Aung. After lunch, we continued our journey to Ngwe Saung Camp, where we arrived in the evening.

On 30th April, we met with Senior Luyeechuns at the camp. In the afternoon, general knowledge quiz competition was held and our Group 1 won the first prize. Later that day, I went back to Yangon since I and four other students from my high school were invited to attend University of Thai’s Chamber of Commerce Discovery Tour in Bangkok on 1st May.

Although I came back early from the camp, I was glad to meet and have a chance to say goodbye to all my old Luyeechun friends for the last time. Now, we all are following our seperate paths to reach our different goals, but all of our main aim is to serve the community our best.  It is the proudest thing in my life to be a Triplicate Luyeechun (All-around Outstanding Student for Three Consecutive Years).”
